The Powerful Benefits of the Alkaline Diet

The Powerful Benefits of the Alkaline Diet

Posted by madeinoasis.com on Aug 9th 2020

You may have heard of the alkaline diet and how it can help with weight loss and overall health. But what is the alkaline diet, and why does it work? Let's take a look.

It All Starts With pH

pH describes how acidic/basic something is. Back in school you might have dipped a piece of blue litmus paper in acid and turned it red, or a piece of red litmus paper in a base to turn it blue. In case it's been a long time since your school chemistry class, we'll break that down a little further.

Acidic Versus Alkaline

You are probably familiar with the term acidic. Many things in our day-to-day life are acidic. There is vinegar, battery acid, and stomach acid. Foods can also be acidic. There is the lactic acid in milk and citric acid in oranges, lemons, and limes. Acids tend to be corrosive to metal, which is why some soft drinks can take rust off chrome. Acidic foods usually taste sour.

Bases are the opposite of acids. They tend to be soapy. Hand soap, window cleaner, and bleach are all bases. Foods can also be bases; avocados and apples are good examples. Another word to describe a base is alkaline. This is where the name Alkaline Diet comes from.

When scientists measure whether something is a base or an acid, they use a scale from 0 to 14 to measure it called the pH. If something is perfectly neutral is has a pH of 7. ( 1) Normal drinking water is usually about a 7. If something is acidic, it will have a pH of less than 7. If it is more than seven, it is considered alkaline.

Food, pH, and You

When you eat food, your body needs to turn it into something you can use for fuel. This process is called your metabolism. Your metabolism takes the food, breaks it down into its chemical components, and turns it into energy. Think about having a campfire. The fire burns the wood making a flame. Your body does the same thing with food, "the flame" is the energy you need to walk around the block or get up in the morning.

Just like with a fire, there is "ash" left behind in your body, this is known as metabolic waste. Your metabolic waste has a pH level. It can be acidic, neutral, or alkaline. Naturally, what you eat changes the nature of the waste. Going back to our campfire example, if you burn paper, it has a different type of ash than burning oak logs. If you eat more acidic food, your metabolic waste will be more acidic. If you eat more alkaline foods, your metabolic waste will be more alkaline.

The Alkaline Diet

Acidic ash can make your body less able to fight off illnesses. Alkaline ash can help to shield your body and improve your health. Fortunately, through the foods you eat, you can change what type of metabolic ash is produced, which is why the alkaline diet is so powerful.

How do you know what foods to eat? Fortunately, we have an essential Alkaline Nutrition Guide that will give you a list of what to eat and avoid. But the basics are pretty simple. Acidic foods include dairy, eggs, fish, meat, and poultry. Alkaline foods include fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. We also recommend supplementing your body's pH with alkaline water. Our guide recommends drinking a gallon of alkaline water per day.

The Alkaline Diet versus Being Vegan

The alkaline diet promotes eating organic, unprocessed, whole fruits and vegetables and avoiding dairy and meat. That may sound like a vegan diet, but there are some key differences. Vegan simply means that it wasn't made with animal products; it doesn't mean it is good for you. Did you know that Doritos are vegan? Oreos, candy, potato chips, crackers, many foods that are terribly unhealthy are still vegan!

So, people following an alkaline diet will naturally be vegan, but not all vegan diets are alkaline.

Why the Alkaline Diet Works

The alkaline diet encourages you to eat foods that support your overall well being and avoid foods, like meat and dairy, that are known to raise your risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The alkaline diet is high in antioxidants, phytonutrients (nutrients that can only be obtained by eating plants), fiber, plant-based proteins, minerals, and vitamins. ( 2) These essential nutrients support your immune system, help your digestive system work correctly, and fight free radicals.

Research has shown that when people embrace eating foods like those in the alkaline diet, they have multiple health benefits, including a lower risk of heart disease and fewer incidents of cancer. ( 3) Studies also show that it can reduce the typical "old age" problems like back pain, joint swelling, stiffness, arthritis symptoms, and osteoporosis. (4)(5)

Furthermore, one of the leading causes of serious life-threatening illnesses is obesity. Research has shown that a diet avoiding acidic foods like meat and fat, and having a diet rich in organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help with weight loss. ( 6)
